The football team is gearing up for the first game of the season, which will be Friday, August 26.
"We're really young this year," Coach Scott Grochow said. "It's one of those years that we have to do a lot of learning. There's a lot of talent in these young kids, and I'm looking forward to the season. They've got a lot of potential."
With only five seniors, Grochow is looking for his players to step up this season.
Anders Johnson, senior, is expected to be a top contender this season as starting quarterback. Kade Leier, who was out half the season last year due to an injury, is back this year and is expected to help lead the team. Another player Grochow is expecting to do well is Kaden Jaeger, a junior.
"The biggest thing with these guys is that we have to do things a lot more slowly than we have in the past because we are so young," Grochow said. "We're not doing things a lot differently than we've done in the past, but we have to adjust a little bit because of our personnel. In this preseason, we've really tried to make sure that we spend a lot more time on doing less but doing it better."
Tough competition this season comes from defending state champions, Park River. Other competitors include Larimore, Langdon and Harvey.
Grochow's ultimate goal for this season is not to necessarily win every game, but to get better. "I finally realized that my biggest goal every year is to get better, both as a football team and, hopefully, as individuals," he said. "I want to get these guys to understand that they can be good if they work at it. I want them to be better, and I want them to give 100% all the time. If they do that, I think they give us a chance to win every time."
