Fern Minerva Anderson

Funeral services Fern Anderson, age 96 of Rugby formerly of Willow City, were held on Friday, July 7, 2017 at 10:00 am the First Lutheran Church in Willow City. Officiating at the service was the Reverend Linda Wimmer and Wally Fretland. Martha Larson was the organist and Craig Wollenburg was the soloist. Casket bearers were Chuck Gibbs, Dwight Marks, Bob Danielson, Randy Myers, Shane Walker, Jim Atkinson and Tim Semler. Honorary casket bearers were the HAMC Care Center Caregivers and the Willow City American Legion Auxiliary. Burial was at the Memorial Park Cemetery at Willow City.

Fern Minerva Anderson was born to Ed and Rosa (Roths) Bickel on December 18, 1920 near Omemee, ND. She was one of 10 children (6 brothers and 3 sisters). Fern attended a rural grade school near Gardena and graduated from Willow City High School in 1939. She attended Minot Teacher's College and graduated with a degree in Elementary Education in 1941. She taught in country schools in Wolford and Upham before moving to San Francisco, CA in 1942. Fern worked as a welder alongside her sister, Marge at Kaiser Shipyards for 3 years.

Fern married Howard Anderson in Minot on March 24, 1945. They purchased a farm in Ostby Township near Willow City. They raised 5 children- Robert, Judy, Richard, Linda, and Vicki. Fern was a member of First Lutheran Church of Willow City, Women of the ELCA, and the Good Neighbors Homemakers Club. She taught Sunday School for many years and was the leader of the first girls 4-H club in Ostby Township. Fern proudly spent 63 years as a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Willow City. Fern and Howard spent a few winters in Arizona and traveled to California to see their children, but it was their life on the farm they en-joyed the most.

In the fall of 2005, they moved to St. Andrew's Apartments in Bottineau. Howard died on January 9, 2008. In July of 2009, Fern moved to the Haaland Estates in Rugby. In January of 2010, she moved to the HAMC Care Center where she lived until the time of her death, July 1, 2017.

Fern loved the farm and taking care of her pets whether it be dogs, cats, or baby calves and watching and feeding the birds. She enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, and playing the piano or organ (which she played by ear). She was known for playing or teaching someone to play, 'On Top of Old Smokey " or Spaghetti was Ferns version. Family and friends were very important to her and she loved to have company. She had a special bond with two of her great-grandchildren, Rhilyn and Zeyan.

Fern passed away on Saturday, July 1, 2017 at a Rugby care center.

Fern is survived by 2 sons, Robert (Dona) Anderson, Palm Desert, CA and Richard (Susan) Anderson, Willow City, ND; 3 daughters, Judy (Roger) Price, San Clemente, CA, Linda (John) Loftin, Santa Monica, CA, and Vicki (Joe) Brennan, Fair Oaks, CA. 12 grandchildren, Roger (Denise Oset) Price of Las Vegas, NV, Holli (Ron) Smith of Encino, CA, Jason (Lindsey) Anderson of Canby, MN, Jordan Anderson, of Willow City, ND, Daren Hiltunen and Mandy and Meghan Loftin all of Santa Monica, CA, Jeff Loftin of Santa Monica, CA, Jason Brennan (Shelby Stone) of Newport Beach, CA, Kayla Brennan (Joey Arnoni) of Madison, WI, Jennifer (Troy) Perkins of Wrightsberg, PA, and Ryan Gebert of Houston, TX; 17 great grandchildren, Rhilyn, Zeyan, Ashlynn, Logan, Justin, Tristan, Kendrick, Roger, Jack, Daniel, Christopher, Christina, Taion,

Ryan, Jordan, Ava, and Madden and 1 great-great grandchild, Madison; 5 brothers, Gene, Dwayne, Curtis, Lyle, and Gary and 1 sister, Eulalia Bareksten.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her father and Mother-in-law (Harry and Hilda), one brother, Jack and 2 sisters, Marge and Lila 2 brothers-in-law; Manvil and Donald.
