In a surprising turn of events in the Rugby gymnasium wrestling Saturday, February 3, the Velva Aggies wiped out the Bishop Ryan Lions to take the Region 3 dual title. It was the first time in five years they won the title that has belonged to the Lions in the past. The Rugby Panthers were out in the first round with Bishop Ryan 57 and Rugby 21.

Velva coach Chad Barstad was all smiles. "This is huge," he said. "We are the Region 3 dual title holders for the first time in five years. Minot Ryan has owned that title over the years."

Bishop Ryan had four players out for the tournament on either the injured list or due to illness. They lost to the Velva Aggies but they did top off Stanley 64-16 to take home second place. Coach Steve Lipp commented, "Velva has a good team, and I knew we going to have a tough time with four of the Lions out. To compete with a team like Velva we need to be strong and it just didn't happen this time."

The championship dual between Velva and Bishop Ryan featured 10 pins, six of them coming in the first round. Aggies won six out of the first seven matches by pins that came from Jon Thomas, Brock Selzer, Wyatt Hanson, Jerimiah Jespersen, Kutter Blumhager and Gunnar Mogen.

In other areas of the tournament, in the first round Velva Defeated Northern Lights 57-13. Stanley defeated Kenmare-Bowbells 50-30, Mondak Thunder defeated Des Lacs Burlington 52-24, and Bishop Ryan defeated Rugby Panthers 57-21.

In the semifinals, Velva defeated Stanley, 42-21. Bishop Ryan defeated Mondak Thunder 52-27. In the championship, Velva defeated Bishop Ryan, Bishop Ryan defeated Stanley for second, and Stanley defeated Mondak Thunder for third place, 39-36.

Region wrestling continues today with individual duals at Des Lacs-Burlington.
